ANFISA Skin turns one: What I learned becoming an entrepreneur.

Happy birthday, ANFISA Skin

A year ago, I knew I had all the raw ingredients for a clean beauty company, but it was only through the continued support of the ANFISA Skin community (that’s you!), friends, and family that I was able to bring everything together. The positive impact of and response to LILOU Regenerating Balm over the last 365 days has been overwhelming. I cannot thank you enough for joining me on this journey and, in celebration of our first anniversary, we are launching our blog: The ANFISA Edit.

The ANFISA Edit is hand-formulated to be your destination for all things skincare and self-care. We will never pretend to have all the answers. Rather, we are sharing our experiences and the scientific expertise we picked up along the way.

People often ask me how I went from working for someone else to running my own clean beauty company, so I thought I would kickstart the blog with how ANFISA Skin and I reached this one-year milestone — and share some of my key learnings.

The story behind ANFISA Skin

In early 2016, my husband Nick and my sister-in-law Tatyana were telling me I should turn my passion, knowledge, and personal experience with skincare into a clean beauty business. Flash forward three years and some incredible things have happened: ANFISA Skin has received national and international recognition, and was featured in magazines I grew up reading like Vogue, GQ, Elle, and Cosmopolitan, among others. Lilou Regenerating Balm is also now sold on Anthropologie’s web-store, which has connected us to an entirely new community.

On a personal level, it was a huge achievement for me to be able to quit my job last August and focus on growing ANFISA Skin full time. After years of research, reformulations —and 80-hour weeks— it felt like my hard work was finally coming to fruition. So how did I get the company to this point?

First off, I am not superhuman, nor am I more talented or skilled than you. Talent is actually not something I believe in, rather I believe that with repetition, dedication, and self discipline we can all have that “talent”. Entrepreneurship for me has never been about being better than anybody else, rather it has been a journey of daily dedication to personal growth, personal development, and personal improvement.

When Nick and Tatyana told me to launch my own clean beauty brand, I thought they were crazy. Sure, my own skin struggles had led me to researching endlessly about ingredients, but what did I know about running a business and being an entrepreneur? It was only after I read Tony Robbins’ book Awaken the Giant Within that I felt that I had the self-confidence and belief that I could turn these aspirations into actions.

Reading is a cornerstone of my life. It is essential to my balancing act of having a healthy body, a healthy mind, and a healthy business. Success goes beyond books though; here are some entrepreneurship tips I picked up since I launched ANFISA Skin that helped me tremendously and I hope you will find useful too.

My Entrepreneurship tips

The early bird gets to work

Monday-Friday I wake up at 5:00am. Yes, I know that is verrryyy early. No, I am not one of those ‘morning people’. I trained myself to wake up at 5:00am because it helps me start my days how I want to: with enough time to plan my day, do some self-care, integrate some self-improvement and have the headspace to tackle the less glam parts of running a business like accounting. (Yay.) To get into the routine, I move my phone far away from my bed, set my alarm loud enough so I could hear it, and practice Mel Robbins’ 5 Second Rule.

Have a morning ritual

Routines and rituals have become integral to my mental health, happiness, and wellbeing. Every morning, I spend a few minutes in prayer and meditation. From there, I allocate twenty minutes to reading a personal improvement book and then another twenty minutes planning my day using the Brendon Burchard High Performance Planner. I always listen to the same song on repeat when I’m doing each specific task to get my brain into that mode quickly (spoiler: it’s “Eye of the Tiger” for planning my day). Then, Nick and I head to the gym, eat breakfast and I’m in the ANFISA Skin office by 9:00am.

Actually be your own boss

Funny thing: when you work for yourself you have so much new found freedom you almost don’t know what to do, what you shouldn’t do, or where to even start. Self discipline is everything!

Schedule personal growth

I am constantly reading books that inspire me to grow. Some of the ones that have helped me as an entrepreneur are Start With Why by Simon Sinek, High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard and Change Your Brain, Change Your Life by Daniel Amen, which truly changed my life. Between running ANFISA Skin and real life, sometimes I’ll listen to an audiobook or a self-help podcast like Kwik Brain with Jim Kwik instead.

Moodboards are a big mood

I am big believer in setting goals. To help me achieve mine, I put a moodboard right above my bed that I see right before I go to sleep and first thing when I wake up. This sends a subliminal message to my subconscious to keep moving and stay motivated.

Set goals — then set the steps

Goals are great, but they’re only as good as the work you put towards achieving them. For me, that means setting actionable steps that are doable and keeping myself accountable. Instead of reflecting on them once a year around January 1, my husband and I review ours weekly to remind ourselves what we want, why we want it, and how to achieve the goals.

Thanks to dedicating myself to a regular routine and investing daily time and energy into my personal growth, I feel stronger than ever. This helps me maintain the health of my body, mind and business. I hope that you found what I shared beneficial or applicable to some area of your life. Keep an eye on the ANFISA Edit for all things skincare and self-care.

xx,

Aly

A scientific study by Marshall Dermatology Research Laboratories shows that when our skin is deficient in linoleic acid and predominantly composed of oleic acid, the skin’s natural sebum becomes thick and sticky, thus clogging pores and exacerbating acne. Linoleic acid is valued for its anti-inflammatory, congestion-reduction, and moisture-retention properties. Our products contain nourishing oils that are high in linoleic acid helping combat even the most sensitive skin concerns without congesting your skin.
